Exodus 18

The power of a testimony.

Then Moses told his father-in-law all that the Lord had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel's sake, all the hardship that had come upon them in the way, and how the Lord had delivered them.

Exodus 18:8

Now I know that the Lord is greater than all gods, because in this affair they dealt arrogantly with the people.

Exodus 18:11

The power of Moses telling Jethro about everything that he had gone through and the way that the Lord had delivered them allows Jethro to see that Moses's God is greater than the gods that Jethro knows. When we share what the Lord has done in our lives, this allows people to see the way that the God of Christianity delivers us while other gods do not have the same power. Jethro even goes so far as to say that the gods he knows dealt arrogantly with the people, meaning those gods do not have the same care, thoughtfulness, or deliverance as Moses's God does.

It is interesting to me that this is a comparison of gods, not a comparison of knowing God versus not knowing God, because historically everyone believed in a god. It was just a matter of which god you believed in. Today we have people who say there is no God, people who believe in the God of Christianity, and people who believe in different gods, so there are different ways to share our testimony to reach the hearts of people. But one of the most powerful ways is to share the story of redemption, the way that Jesus delivers us because He died on the cross, and the way that we live a new life because of what He did. That tends to allow people to realize that they don't live a new life with what their god is doing. Their god deals arrogantly with them, whereas our God delivers us.

The gospel is so powerful and I preach it to myself every day, reminding myself that I am forgiven by the grace of God because Jesus Christ had the power to defeat sin and death. We see it right here again in Moses's testimony, that our God delivers people and that He is greater than all other gods. I am grateful for the God that I serve.
