Exodus 2

One day, when Moses had grown up, he went out to his people and looked on their burdens, and he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his people.

Exodus 2:11

They said, "An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds and even drew water for us and watered the flock."

Exodus 2:19

The name Moses means "drawn out of water" in Hebrew and "son" in Egyptian. The ESV Study Bible notes that God uses Moses "to draw Israel as his son out of Egypt."

God gives each of us a purpose. It is clear that Moses has a calling on his life, and a big part of it can be summed up as deliverance. He is quick to see unrighteousness, suppression, and the slavery and groaning of the people of Israel in Egypt. He identifies with the Hebrew people, and when he sees an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, he feels it deeply and knows something needs to be done. He doesn't necessarily act in the right way because he kills the Egyptian, but he recognizes what is wrong and what needs to be done about it. We see another example of his calling in verse 19, when he delivers the daughters out of the hand of the shepherds. These women recognize Moses as an Egyptian rather than a Hebrew, which I imagine was a hard thing for him to navigate, but it seems like overall Moses is following his calling given by God, and his identity is mostly with God at this time.

The important thing I notice here is being attentive to what is not right around us, having the courage to help and deliver people from unrighteousness, and being bold enough to take action on that. It is also interesting that Exodus 2 closes with Moses helping to deliver people, and then ends with verse 25, "God saw the people of Israel, and God knew." God is seeing the people of Israel, remembering His covenant, knowing what is next, and taking action. In a way, this is exactly what Moses is doing throughout this chapter too.

I really like the writing of Exodus and I am excited to continue reading and watching this story unfold. It already shows the power of God through the naming of Moses, through his life as a child, and then through his life as an adult. There is a lot of depth to this Scripture and I definitely want to study and learn more. I am leaving today appreciative of God's deliverance, knowing that He is the one who is sovereign and always in control, trusting in His timeline, and knowing that God sees us, He remembers, and He knows. I am grateful for the wisdom of this day.
