Exodus 12
The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt.
Exodus 12:13
Pointing directly to Christ. In the times of the Old Testament, the sign of salvation and redemption is the blood of animals, displayed as a reminder to the people that they are the Lord's people, and that sin requires sacrifice. Today, under the new covenant, Jesus Christ died for us and His blood saves us. The blood of Jesus defeated sin, Satan, and death. His blood was shed because He sacrificed His life for us and for our sins. Our reminder today is taking communion, where we eat the bread and drink the wine, the body and the blood of Jesus Christ, and we are reminded that He is the one that saves us and claims us. In the same way that God saw the blood and passed over His people, Jesus Christ claims us and God says you're in, and the plague does not fall upon us to destroy us. This relates to our eternity. The consequences of sin do not fall down and destroy us for eternity when we are in and with Jesus Christ. There will be consequences for us in this world, but for eternity, Jesus has paid the price and sacrificed Himself for our sins.
This is such a powerful writing in Exodus 12 because it speaks to the fact that there are things that we do as signs that are reminders to ourselves. They are not to show other people, they are not to show God that we are His. They are reminders to ourselves. Just as the people put the blood on the doorposts, we take communion, we may wear the cross, we may have a sticker or artwork that is Christian, but this is not for God. This is for ourselves and for our own reminder that Jesus's blood was shed for us. In the same way that the Lord asked the people to keep the memorial day of the Passover throughout the generations, we are called to share the name of Jesus Christ throughout generations, to raise up our children to be believers, to be reminded every day so that we can keep it forever.
A part of the fall of human nature is that we tend to forget, and then we repent, and then we forget again, and we do the same cycle over and over. But if we create some sort of potent reminder for ourselves, such as blood on the doorposts, then maybe we can remember.
